Since some games were much better than others, we've decided to rank the best NES RPGs of all time. NES is the console that invented modern gaming as we know it, and put out the first RPGs ever made. This list will feature the most popular and best selling RPGs that were released for NES. While many of these games were console exclusive, we're allowing non-exclusives to be a part of the list.
The Guardian Legend is one of the more unique RPGs you will play on the NES and the setting of the game is a huge region for it. What might otherwise be looked at as a straight sci-fi shooter is transformed into an action RPG due to the plentiful lore that underscores your every action.
An important influence on the action RPG genre was the 1986 action-adventure The Legend of Zelda, which served as the template for many future action RPGs. In contrast to previous action RPGs, such as Dragon Slayer and Hydlide, which required the player to bump into enemies in order to attack them, The Legend of Zelda featured an attack button that animates a sword swing or projectile attack.
